Yesterday I had a really fun day out in Manchester at the Company Fashion Forum! I saw the advert for the event in last month's Company magazine and I knew that I needed to go (nothing to do with the free goody bags...ahem). After my recent job loss and relentless hunt for a job/internship in fashion, a chance to receive expert advice from Victoria White, the editor of Company magazine (my dream job!) along with a panel of fashion industry insiders seemed like an opportunity not to be missed.

The event was held at Manchester University in one of the lecture rooms which was full of fellow bloggers, fashion students and enthusiasts, all of whom were super stylish! It was a great opportunity to get some fashion inspo as well as fashion job advice.
The event involved the panel talking individually about themselves and their jobs, and how they managed to get where they are today. Their jobs all varied so much but a lot of the advice was quite similar; work hard, make yourself indispensable and you will get the job!
I decided to take notes of things I needed to improve/do based on the advice I received:
- Make your job application stand out; send your C.V in the post with a handwritten letter in a package and be as creative as possible.
- If you're sending an email make the subject line stand out with something funny or interesting, otherwise it will just get deleted without being read.
- Keep cover letters brief; all the employer wants to know is why you love the company and want to work for them and what you can offer.
- Cut out any irrelevant jobs/work experience on your C.V, the employer doesn't want to know your life story! Make it short, snappy and to the point.
- Offer to set up and look after the social media for a local fashion boutique or store that doesn't have a strong online presence, it all counts as experience and you are helping them out for free.
- Get a LinkedIn account and Twitter, this is the best way to network online and 'stalk' the people/companies you want to work for!
- If you have a blog make it good; there's no point in having a blog if it's rubbish!
- Get as much experience working for magazines as possible, once you've worked for one the chance is you will get to move around and work for many more.
This was just a fraction of the advice given to us at the event, if I told you all of it this post would be pages and pages long! It was all super inspiring and motivating though, and I will be spending a lot of time taking on board all this advice and improving my chances of landing a job in fashion.
Now on to the important stuff, the goody bag!
The Goody Bag |
So the free bag of goodies just made the day even better! My top three freebies have to be the Palmer's Cocoa Butter, Beverly Hills Formula Perfect White toothpaste and Nail Art Nail Tattoos. I shall definitely be trying the Nail Tattoos this weekend for my friends' birthday night out!
And last but not least here is what I wore for the Company Fashion Forum:
Neon Jumper | eBay
Leather Look Leggings and Boots | Topshop
Coat | Missguided
Rucksack | New Look
Neon Necklace | H&M
Black Chain Necklace | River Island
Please excuse my poor quality phone pictures throughout this post!
I hope you all have a nice weekend :)
